What is a music video?

What is a music video?

A music video is a performance of a recorded popular song which is videotaped , it is accompanied by dancing and visual images interpreting the lyrics.

Passenger- Let her go is an example of a simple but effective music video

The production of a music video can be used to experiment with a different structure, style , camera angels and editing techniques that we are not familiar with seeing in conventional broadcast.

Katy Perry - Last friday night is an example of how music videos can be diverse in terms of style , structure and mise en scene. Although this music video is a different genre we can gather a sense of how a music video experiments.

What is the purpose of a music video?

The are numerous purposes but it's main purpose is to promote the single , the album the single is from and the artist.
In order for a music to do so , the music video must :

  1. Sell the song in a way that can allow the audience to memorise the song from the video
  2. To provide the viewer with an understanding of the songs so they engage with it both visually and audibly - this is achieved through a performance or a'story telling'
  3. The viewer must be entertained by highlighting other talents from the artist besides singing , other talents may include dancing, playing a musical instrument or artistic images.
Music video is a marketing tool which is used visually to help promote the artist , their brands and their products to as wide as a audience as possible.
