Through Laura Mulvey's perspective

Through Laura Mulvey's Perspective

Bottoms up - Trey Songz ft Nicki Minaj

Sounds - The music contained in this music video is all about girls, money, sex and alcohol which Mulvey exerts in her explanations as these are the things people can relate to especially for "males".
For instant the lyrics consist of "pocket full of green. gal you know I love it when you shake it in those jeans". This immediately portrays that this music video is based on mainstream themes. E.g - Girls

Camera- At the beginning of the music video the male artist is at the centre of attention therefore illustrating his superiority and dominance therefore many closes -ups were showcased. There were mid- close up shots used throughout the video on women in the music video which in a sense exploits them therefore making Mulvey's theory on the "male gaze" to some extent correct.
The music video is fast paced and involves a lot of camera movement which conveys fast pace environment therefore enticing it with the lyrics.

Mise en Scene-

Body Language- The male artist is instantly attracted to the half-naked women which leads on to becoming quite sexual and intimate. The half-naked women are performing a sexual dance allowing them to 'lure in' attention , especially male attention. The body language from the male artist could be seen in a way in which males would behaviour therefore creating women as sex objects. The female artist responds to this through sexual body language.

Costumes- It feels quite obvious what types of costumes are worn in this music video. The male artist had a black suit which covey his power and control. There was a part were the artist takes his blazer of and loosens up the shirt, this gives a sense of casualness. He also had sunglasses on which again conveys his power and to a certain extent his 'smoothness/coolness'. The female artist had something on that was quite revealing to the eye. The female performers also were dressed in a sexual manner such as black mini dresses.

Setting/Props- The setting was dark and had flashes of lights and also contained spotlights, this remained throughout the most of the music video. Props were used to emphasises the lyrics. For instant a bottle of alcohol was used which is one of the things mentioned in the music video. Another prop used was a chair but not no ordinary chair , it was a chair fit for a king in which the male artist used to view the ladies from ,this is something male viewers would also be doing due to the 'male gaze'.
